Surrealists feasted on the unconscious. They believed that Freud's theories on dreams, ego, superego and the id opened doors to the authentic self and a truer reality (the "surreal" means beyond or above reality). They relished the possibilities of chance and spontaneity.

Expressionism – is a manner of painting in which natural forms and colours are distorted and exaggerated. The artist uses these forms and colours to give visual form to inner sensations or emotions. They portrait subjective reality rather than realism.

Cubism is characterized by an emphasis on the formal structure of a work of art and the reduction of natural forms of their geometrical equivalents.

Impressionism portrays the effects of experience upon the consciousness of the artist  and the audience. The artist is more worried about  the technique of suggesting lights and colour of the picture than the subject matter.

Dadaism is a style of painting which is a protest against the horrors of World War 1 which had been a show of barbarism  and oppressive intellectual rigidity in both art and everyday society.

Realism centers around real problems. Colours and forms appear in ordinary visual experience.
